Why am I passionate about Family Medicine? Family Physicians have the breadth and depth of knowledge to care for patients of any age and across the spectrum of illness. We build relationships with patients that can span over years. We care for our patients at their most vulnerable. We guide them back to wellness from illness and are there for them at the end of life. We are a truly important part of our patients’ lives. I feel grateful that I am a Family Physician, and I feel it is my mission to help train the Family Physicians of tomorrow.

I view myself as a mentor and a coach above anything else. Surgical education is not just about the technical specifics of suturing or cutting through tissue, but it is much more so how to build a safe and competent surgeon out of a trainee. This process takes time, experience, and directed mentorship. I try to identify unique aspects of every trainee, build on their strengths, and work specifically through repetition to improve their weaknesses. On our service, I expect the chief to run the service, and I will support them as they become more familiar and comfortable with thoracic issues.

My hope is to help impart a thorough knowledge of thoracic surgery on all cooper surgery trainees, which will hopefully help them in whatever specialty they choose to pursue.

Jack W. Shilling, MD, brings more than 18 years of surgical experience to the Cooper Bone and Joint Institute. Previously, Dr. Shilling was a joint reconstruction surgeon at Aria 3B Orthopaedic Specialists in Langhorne, PA. Prior to that, he was the Director of Adult Reconstructive Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Trauma for the Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, PA.

Dr. Shilling specializes in the areas of hip and knee joint replacement. He has special interest in complex hip and knee reconstruction including high-risk primary arthroplasty, revision arthroplasty, periprosthetic fractures, and infection.

Dr. Shilling received his medical degree from Hahnemann University School of Medicine, in Philadelphia, PA. He completed a surgical internship at Penn State University, Hershey Medical Center, and completed his residency at the University of Rochester, in Rochester, NY. He also pursued fellowship training in adult reconstructive orthopaedics, at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Shilling's goal is to lead and grow the Joint Replacement and Reconstruction Program by offering patients the most advanced surgical techniques and best clinical outcomes possible.

Dr. Siefring is Assistant Professor of OB-GYN and Medical Director of the Center for Vulvovaginal Disease at Cooper. He is a graduate of the University of Guadalajara and completed his OB-GYN residency at Cooper. He has received multiple teaching awards and has been selected as a Top Doc in South Jersey Magazine. The fellows gain most of their experience in vulvar diseases with Dr. Siefring during his monthly vulvovaginitis clinic.

Jim Siegler, MD, is a new recruit from the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where he recently completed his adult neurology residency, and clinical and research fellowships in vascular neurology. Although he is active in a number of ongoing research projects and clinical trials, Dr. Siegler is more widely known as the Senior Producer of BrainWaves: A Neurology Podcast. Since its inception in 2013, the BrainWaves Podcast has been played nearly half a million times in the US and around the globe. Dr. Siegler also serves on the Editorial Board of Neurology®, is an Assistant Producer of the AAN’s NeuroBytes video-based educational curriculum, and is the senior producer and editor of the Neurocritical Care Society Podcast. When he is not in his recording studio, you can probably find him watching senseless action movies from the 90s or riding his bike out to Valley Forge.
