Course Overview
The student will gain sufficient understanding of the evaluation and management of patients with vascular diseases to enable comprehensive primary care management of these conditions. Students will:
- Make relevant findings in obtaining the history and physical examination of patients with vascular disease.
- Articulate an appropriate differential diagnosis for patients with acute and chronic vascular conditions.
- Demonstrate cost-effective use of diagnostic modalities in assessing patients with vascular disease.
- Develop and participate in the implementation of appropriate patient management plans.
- Participate in the Divisional conferences, including Morbidity & Mortality, Interesting Cases, and exploration of special topics in vascular disease.
Course Content & Outline: Description of Activities
The student will be an integral member of the Vascular Surgery Service at Cooper University Health Care. Rounds usually start at 6 a.m. on weekdays. The student will attend operative, interventional and diagnostic procedures on patients on the service. They will also evaluate consults, both in the Emergency Department and in the hospital. In addition, the student will attend the faculties’ office hours.
The student will perform history and physical examinations on patients admitted to the service. They will perform focused exams on patients who are seen in consultation, develop differential diagnoses for these patients, and will formulate a plan for further evaluation and management. Any missed time during the rotation will require remediation targeted at resolving the specific deficiency in the student’s experience.
