Vascular Neurology

Welcome to the Vascular Neurology Fellowship Program at Cooper University Hospital! We are an ACGME-accredited one year fellowship program, accepting one clinical fellow each year.

Cooper University Health Care is the leading academic health system in South New Jersey, serving as a joint commission certified comprehensive stroke center, and the tertiary care center for the region. Cooper is proud to have been recognized by the American Heart Association with several awards for the exceptional care of stroke patients. Clinical facilities include a dedicated inpatient stroke service, neuroscience intensive care unit, neurointerventional suite within the emergency department, multidisciplinary outpatient clinic facilities, and ample dedicated conference and workspaces.

The focus of the fellowship program is to provide future vascular neurologists with exceptional training in the clinical care of patients with neurovascular conditions, while also fostering a diverse skill set through the opportunity to engage in a variety of elective, educational, and research opportunities. The schedule is divided into four-week blocks, with fellows spending seven blocks on the inpatient stroke services. Under the guidance and mentorship of vascular neurology faculty, they will lead the clinical team, evaluate acute stroke patients, and engage in telestroke consultations with increasing autonomy over the course of the year. Other rotations and elective options include the neurocritical care unit, neurorehabilitation, neurosonology, neuroradiology, interventional neuroendovascular, and research blocks, as well as four weeks of vacation time. Overnight call is once per week and performed at home under the supervision of vascular neurology faculty. Weekend call is once per month. Fellows will attend outpatient clinic only when not on the inpatient stroke service, and approximately three half-day sessions per week.

Our world class faculty are passionate about teaching, and in addition to teaching in the clinical environment, there are several structured educational experiences that fellows enjoy. These include dedicated didactic sessions with faculty, two case conference series – the stroke board and neurovascular conferences, journal club, regional vascular neurology symposiums, vascular neurology research meetings, and grand rounds. Fellows will also have ample opportunity to develop their teaching skills by engaging with neurology residents and medical students through clinical collaboration, didactics, and at our simulation center.

At Cooper, our mission is to advance vascular neurology both through the care of our patients and through research and innovation. Our department is engaged in a variety of academic pursuits and clinical trials, and we are dedicated to providing fellows with strong mentorship in the development of their interests and goals, whether that be clinical or translational research, public health, medical education, or quality improvement.

Fellows are provided with an educational stipend to attend conferences and for other educational pursuits.
