Our major mission is to provide the best clinical care to Camden and Southern Jersey population, a significantly evolving community. While Cooper hospital has been in existence for more than 130 years, the birth of our new medical school, Cooper Medical School of Rowan University (CMSRU) occurred five years ago. Clinical care training, broad-base education and fostering interest of our trainees and future psychiatrists is our main academic goal. We have a strong and dedicated faculty teaching trainees in a collegial learning environment to be the most competent, professional, compassionate and empathic psychiatrist in the 21st century.
Residents are exposed to a wide variety of mental illness while at the same time promoting mental health. Residents are mainly trained at Cooper Hospital and its associated outpatient clinic located across the street from the hospital in Camden, NJ. Residents are exposed early in their training to integrated medicine and the practice of inter-professional collaboration. Since Cooper Hospital is a trauma center, our physicians at Cooper are very skilled at handling substantial volume of patients but at the same time gain a lot of knowledge from these experiences. Thus, our residency training prepares residents for the best clinical practice, with taking a leadership role in their higher training years in improving the future of health care.
We also emphasize the valuable art of psychotherapy as part of our patient treatment plan of care. Our program is one of few that have training in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy as well as focus on psychoanalytic/psychodynamic psychotherapy. Other aspects of training include psychopathology and psychopharmacology training. In addition, we offer training in neuromodulation, which include electroconvulsive therapy, transcranial magnetic stimulation and ketamine infusion for treatment resistant cases. While all residents are expected to contribute to quality improvement, grand round presentations and case conferences as a GME requirement, those with special interest in research will be assigned mentors that share the interest to work with.

I wish you the best on your own personal journey!
