Most rotations are scheduled in 2-week blocks, which provides a good continuity for inpatient teams but also prevents the burn out of staying for too long on busier rotations. The night float rotations are an exception, scheduled in one-week blocks (with a day off in the middle) and always followed by an outpatient or elective week with a golden weekend at the end.
Inpatient blocks:
We have two inpatient teams: general neurology and stroke teams. Each team consists of an attending, a senior resident (PGY3/4) and a junior resident (PGY2). There are usually a few rotators (internal medicine, psychiatry, neurology PGY1) as well as third- and fourth-year medical students. The general neurology also has an inpatient PA, who assists with several patient related tasks, consults and coverage during didactics.
All classes have 1-4 weeks of BEAST, a swing resident that assists with afternoon/evening consults from Monday to Friday.
The Neuro-ICU is a 16-bed closed unit staffed by neurology or neurosurgery trained neurocritical care specialists. Each resident rotates on it for 4 weeks throughout their training.
Outpatient blocks and electives:
The total amount of outpatient and elective rotations (not including PTO) per class is:
PGY2: 8-10 weeks outpatient and 7 weeks of elective
PGY3: 8-10 weeks outpatient and 11-13 weeks of elective
PGY4: 10 weeks outpatient and 12 weeks of elective
The required outpatient rotations during PGY2, 3 and 4 are:
- Epilepsy
